Dog on Board

46 per cent of Austrian households have a pet, 17 per cent of which have a dog. Fortunately, most charter agencies are dog-friendly and these beloved four-legged friends are allowed on board.

Why does this topic mean so much to me right now? For a few weeks now, we’ve had a little Portuguese Water Dog called Merlin. Dog owners know that in the first few weeks, you observe your dog, get used to one another and give the puppy the best home you can provide. But as an innovation manager, I’m particularly fascinated by the fact that dogs cannot communicate their needs verbally. This means you have to look closely, experiment and learn.

For me, this means: what do dogs need on board? Exercise, rest, food, water and a place to do their business. Just like at home – yet different. Heat, rolling and waves present additional challenges. Cooling blankets and vests help with the heat, whilst non-slip surfaces, leak-proof bowls or automatic drinking fountains help with rolling and waves.

Safety also requires solutions that aren’t necessary at home. Nets on the railings are an obvious choice. Floatation aids with handles, reflectors and GPS trackers have been specially developed to ensure your dog’s survival should they go overboard. And during manoeuvres? Dogs must be secured particularly well so that, in the commotion, they do not endanger everyone’s safety.

Floating toys for chewing, searching and fetching are a great way to combat boredom. And when it’s time to get in the water? Fold-out ramps and floating platforms make it easier to get on board. So nothing stands in the way of a relaxing time on board.
